As Nigeria marks 64 years of independence, the resilience of its farmers remains a testament to the nation’s strength. However, they continue to face serious challenges, from security threats to climate change, affecting food security and economic stability. A recent S.B. Morgan Intelligence REPORT reveals that between 2020 and 2024, at least 1,356 farmers have lost their lives, highlighting the urgent need for solutions that involve all stakeholders—farmers, herders, communities, and the government.
A Historical Context: Understanding the Challenges
Since gaining independence on October 1st, 1960, Nigeria has experienced growth across various sectors. However, the agricultural sector struggles with multiple crises, including security risks, environmental factors, and economic pressures. These challenges affect not only farmers but also herders, traders, and millions who rely on agriculture for their livelihood.
Security Challenges and the Need for Collaboration
Farmers in different parts of Nigeria, especially in the North-East and North-West, face security threats that disrupt their livelihoods. Communities in Borno, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Niger have reported incidents of attacks on farms, displacement, and loss of life.
While security forces are working to address these threats, a collaborative approach—one that includes community engagement, intelligence sharing, and proactive security measures—is essential to ensure the safety of both farmers and rural communities.
The Farmer-Herder Conflict: A Call for Understanding
The conflict between farmers and herders, particularly in the North-Central region, remains a source of tension. Studies indicate that issues such as land competition, climate change, and resource scarcity contribute to the crisis. Rather than deepening divisions, constructive dialogue and conflict-resolution strategies should be prioritized. Afrik Fair encourages discussions that promote peaceful coexistence, fair land access policies, and long-term solutions for both farmers and herders.
Climate Change: A Shared Challenge
Environmental issues, such as flooding and desertification, add to the challenges faced by farmers and herders alike. The 2022 floods destroyed nearly 700,000 hectares of farmland, affecting food supply chains nationwide. Similarly, the collapse of the Alau Dam in Borno State led to massive agricultural losses. Addressing climate change requires urgent investment in sustainable agriculture, irrigation systems, and reforestation efforts.
Food Security: A National Concern
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that 26.5 million Nigerians could face food insecurity in 2024. Rising food prices, inflation, and security threats contribute to the crisis. Tackling this issue demands a comprehensive approach that includes:
✅ Improved security for farming communities
✅ Investment in modern agriculture techniques
✅ Fair policies that benefit both farmers and herders
✅ Support for displaced communities
